Located in the Township of Sharpeville the Sharpeville memorial Precint was built to honour the lives lost during the Sharpeville Massacre on 21 March 1960. This area is referred to by former president Nelson Mandela as the Cradle of Human Rights. This area is also of significance within South Africa as Nelson Mandela signed the South African Constitution in Sharpeville.

Located in the Township of Sharpeville, the area where the tragic incidents of 1960 occurred.  The Sharpeville Memorial and precinct was opened on 21 March 2002 by Dr. Nelson Mandela. It is located in Seeiso Street in Sharpeville, opposite the police station where the shootings took place.

The memorial Precinct honours those who lost their lives in the Sharpeville Massacre on 21 March 1960. The Sharpeville Human Rights Precinct is a memorial to victims of the watershed event that was the beginning of the end of apartheid. This area is located opposite the police station in Sharpeville; this is the same spot where over 300 people marched on the police station in Sharpeville to hand in their pass books. A total of 69 people (including 13 anonymous foreigners) were shot dead and 180 injured when police opened fire.

This area is also of significance within South Africa as Nelson Mandela signed the South African Constitution in Sharpeville on the 10th of December, 1996, this was also to be the official opening of “The Sharpeville Memorial" to honour the victims of the Sharpeville massacre of 1960
