History is littered with bizzare stories of dictators and leaders demanding absurd things from their citizens.During the hey days of the then Bophutatswana (homeland) the then President decided that donkeys should be wiped out from Bophutatswana due to the fact, in his understanding that they ate all the grass meant for cows and caused accident.
Whilst most of the poor community relied on donkeys as a means of transport and a work too espicially within the rural areas. So donkeys was a means of economic development and the then government ordered the killing of thousand of donkeys. We talk to people who lost their donekys during those time and find out more about the expirience of that fatal day
Donkeys has since been the commodity of transport to most communities in rural areas like in the now North West province. Which was the former Bophuthatswana government. The former Bantu government dominated by black communities who were mostly in remote areas like villages and the sdocial - economic development was slow for those in the rural areas, hence the means of transport for those communities were mainly donkey carts.
It happened in 1983 were that the homeland of Bophuthatswana killed about 20.000 of these animals. The justification of the argument given was cattle’s were more deserving of the grass than donkeys in terms of grazing land, however this was not only to do with cattle’s.Destroying the one economic tools that the poor had, some people never recovered for the donkeys were not just animals they were someone property and livelyhood.
